Services

The main therapeutic orientation of the practice is cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). This type of psychological therapy is widely considered to be the most effective (evidence-based) short term therapy for a range of psychological problems. The aim of CBT is to assist people to learn skills in managing unhelpful thinking and emotional distress, and to make changes to the way they respond to difficult situations in life. It is a practical approach designed to focus on present day problems.

A range of psychological difficulties can be treated, including:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety (including fears/phobias, panic attacks, response to trauma)
  • Depressed mood
  • Low self-esteem
  • Grief and loss
  • Lifestyle imbalance
  • Lack of future direction and indecisiveness
  • Adjustment to a diagnosis of physical illness
  • Difficulty coping with chronic physical illness
  • Chronic pain management
  • Insomnia/sleep problems
  • Relationship issues (personal or professional)
  • Parenting stress (including post-natal depression and anxiety)
  • Coping with a physically or mentally unwell loved one.

Effect Psychology provides psychological services for adults only. Services not included are neuropsychological assessments, forensic assessments and assessment and treatment of children. We do not specialise in the treatment of Eating Disorders and we do not conduct assessments for neurodivergence (eg. autism, ADHD). These are specialist areas with a number of services in Adelaide available to assist.

Psychologists do not prescribe medication as we are not medically trained. At Effect Psychology we will work closely with your regular doctor (GP) or psychiatrist who can prescribe medication if needed.
